Bill Banks (Royal Canberra, ACT) produced a sensational final round to snatch victory in the 2006 South Australian Senior Amateur Championships held at the picturesque Mt Osmond Golf Club from September 14 - 15.

After an opening round of 79 that saw him in 15th place Banks fired a great final round of 69 to finish on 148 and edge out Denis Dale (75,74) Ian Read (73,76) and John Hill (73,76) by one shot. Banks played excellent golf on the tight and demanding course and finished the eighteen holes of his final round without a bogey on the card.

Read (Indooroopilly, Qld) was the unlucky player of the championship when his drive on the final hole could not be found and he incurred a 2 shot penalty. A drive to the right side of the par 5 18th was the undoing for Read as a keen search failed to locate the ball. Bravely overcoming his misfortune Read played the round right to the finish but his final putt to tie Banks hung agonisingly over the hole and refused to drop.

In a three way tie for second was local Mount Osmond member John Hill, who had shared the first round lead with Read. Current Australian Seniors Champion, Denis Dale (Cabramatta,NSW) birdied the final 2 holes to also grab a share of second with Read and Hill.

One shot further away was the ever present Chris Coats (Peregian Springs, Qld). Coats followed his opening 75 with another steady round and another 75. Coats is always in the finish of these events and he is expected to win a major title very soon.

This was the first year the South Australian Seniors Championship has counted towards the Australian Seniors Order of Merit and a strong interstate contingent contested the event. The interstate players performed well filling 8 of the top 10 places.

The new South Australian Senior Champion Bill  Banks has been a prolific winner on the senior golf circuit and he now looks forward to the next major seniors tournament - the Victorian Senior Amateur Championship to be held at Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance courses from October 30 - November 2, 2006. Undoubtably the consistency of Banks will make sure he again starts favourite for the Victorian Championship as he has won this 72 hole event for the last 3 years.

The Australian Senior Order of Merit (ASOOM) has been a great success. In the inaugural 2005-06 year over 700 senior golfers across Australia participated in Order of Merit events. The ASOOM schedule for 2006-07 has already expanded with more events and the very keen competition and interest in the Order of Merit is sure to occur again
