   2012 NSW Senior Classic

Teeing off in second place after a fine round of 78 at The Lakes, New South Wales Golf Club member Graham Blizard (above right) played well again for a solid score of 75 at The Australian and a well earned 3 stroke victory in the 2012 NSW Senior Classic. This was the first national event for Blizard and he has the rare distinction of claiming a title in his first start. More wins are certainly in store for this talented senior.

Greg Stanford (above left) had the equal best round of the day at The Australian with a two over par 74. This gave hime second place in the 36 hole event and his best finish in a national event. Third place went to Wyong senior Norm Hollis (79-78) and a deserved result for one of only two players who broke 80 in each round - well done Norm!
The NSW Senior Classic was rated a level 3 event in the Australian Senior Rankings.

The important handicap competition was won by Windsor golfer Stephen Hall with net rounds of 76-71 =147. He finished four shots clear of Graham Blizard and five clear of Greg Stanford. Hall earns 130 points for his handicap win and he will now climb right up the rankings table for the year long handicap competition.

   Leedham Wins Tassie Senior

Previously a four time winner of this event local member Michael Leedham made it five titles with a comfortable victory in the 2012 Tasmanian Senior Amateur Championship played at the Mowbray Golf Club.

After sharing the round one lead with Ross Percy and then extending his lead to two strokes after the second round Leedham played flawless golf in the final round for a round of 70 and a 54 hole total of one under par (69-72-71=212). In second place and seven strokes behind Leedham was the defending champion Victorian Ross Percy (69-74-76=219).

These two top class seniors had held the top two places from the first round and it was fitting that they should finish in the top two positions when the tournament was over. Third place went to Queensland newcomer David Burton (74-74-73=221) and it should not be too long before this very talented senior claims a major title. Burton is actually a Kiwi living in Australia but he is looking forward to a major assault on the 2012 Australian Senior Ranking competition.

Victorian John Wheeler (74-73-76=223) had a very successful tournament and finished alone in fourth place. The top five was completed by yet another Victorian, Alan Buckley (76-72-77=225) and he will be hoping he carries this form into the New Zealand Seniors when he crosses the ditch for this event next week.

Royal Hobart senior Graham Roberts (75-79-74=228) played consistently for sixth place as did two more Victorians - Pat Giles (78-76-75=229) and Alan Bullas (76-78-75=229) who shared seventh position.

The handicap competition was very keenly contested and the result was a tie for first place between local Mowbray member Doug Knowles who stormed home with a final net score of 65 to catch Peter Bence who was very consistent with net rounds of 68-67-73. Third went to another local David Hamilton with rounds of 65-69-75.

All three will climb into the top ten of the 2012 Australian Senior Ranking Handicap Competition. This competition runs parallel to the traditional scratch competition with medals presented at the end of the year to the top three seniors on the handicap table (see left).

   SA Senior Pennant Final

Ken Brown from Tea Tree Gully GC has submitted the following report. Note the challenge at the end of the report!

Thanks to Mike Jackson from Mt Osmond an Adelaide Men's Senior Pennant competition commenced in 2007 and has continued successfully every year since.

Tea Tree Gully continued their dominance of the competition with a fifth straight victory in the final held at Kooyonga Golf Club that was presented in it's normal immaculate condition with the fairways just superb.

Tea Tree Gully senior pennant players Chris Everett (Capt), Kevin Bew (Paradise Mazda), Phil Smith, Bob Crosby, John Lucas, Ken Brown, Mike Richards, Ron Davidson & Doug Gerow celebrate their vistory.

The Tea Tree Gully team defeated West Lakes GC (Riverside was the old name) 6 matches to 1 and has now won the pennant every year since it commenced (yes 2007 to 2011). The score line in our last 5 matches was 32 won, one lost and 2 halves. Not bad!

If any of the winning teams from other states want a match we are more than willing to take them on! I am sure we could arrange to meet half way or there abouts.

   Aussies Win Asia Pacific

Australian Team B member Peter King closed with a tournament best one under par 71. King fired five birdies in a magnificent round that saw him make up a 10 shot deficit in the individual event and force a tie with Australia A member Roy Vandersluis who also came from 4 behind. In the play off it was Peter King who took the title with a rock solid par on the first play off hole. Stefan Albinski finished in third place, just one stroke out of the play off.

Team B also took the team trophy from Australia A when Paul Maslen improved on his opening scores with a very good round of 74. Earlier Chris Coats' opening rounds of 76 and 79 had kept Team B in the race and they were a very happy team as they passed Team A for a memorable win. After sharing the lead with one round to go the New Zealand team finished in third place.

The New Zealand scores were as follows: Murray Martin 75-76-83, Phil Mosley 78-80-78 and Arthur Parkin 79-79-84.

Apart from the great final rounds from Peter King and Paul Maslen it was mainly a day highlighted by "spectacular" scores. Chris Coats opened with a triple bogey 7 start, then Murray Martin had a quadruple 8 on the fifth hole only to be beaten by Denis Dale's 9 on the same hole. Later Martin, when leading the individual title, added a double and triple bogey on 16 and 17. Royal Perth was definitley setup for a championship and only the very best players scored well.
