Round Three Report:
Courtesy of Bob Angus:
Leading by two shots teeing off Stefan Albinski made a tentative start being 3 over after 3 holes while his nearest chaser Graham Bowen made up only one shot in that time. From there on both played near par golf until Stefan birdied the difficult 15th to take his lead out to 5 shots when Graham had a bogey.
Further bogeys at 16 & 17 to Graham and another birdie to Stefan at 17 saw the margin extend to 8. The drama then moved to the battle for second place with Graham now caught by another top WA senior Ian McPherson who finished with a strong closing to card 75.
Graham knew he needed a par at the difficult long par 4 closing hole to tie Ian for second place. Golf WA rewards the highest finishing WA senior with an all expenses paid trip to the 2012 Australian Senior Championship at Yarra Yarra in September.
After a very solid drive Graham still needed a 3 wood to the green and he produced a fabulous shot to get the ball about 2 metres away but not by any means a "gimme" as it was cross and down hill. Without a birdie all round he then calmly stroked the ball in the cup to finish second and be the leading WA player.
While that drama was unfolding Stefan found a greenside bunker and the resultant double bogey meant he was the winner with a 5 shot margin. Remarkably the WA Senior finish was Albinski-Bowen-McPherson just as it was a year earlier at Mandurah Golf Club.
Fourth place and best score in round 3 went to the ageless legend Alex Cleave who at 70+ showed the ‘young blokes’ how it is done with a fine closing round of 74.
