2012 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP AT BARMERA GOLF CLUB

Golf SA has just been advised by the Riverland District Secretary that due to unforeseen circumstances Renmark GC can no longer host the Senior Amateur in September and the event has now been moved to Barmera GC.

Barmera is approximately 30km from Renmark so anybody who has already booked accommodation in Renmark would still easily be able to travel to Barmera.

This is a link to the Barmera website for your information - http://www.barmeragolfclub.com.au/

Barmera is a par 72, eighteen hole greens course cut into natural Riverland terrain. Its greens are highly regarded as exceptionally good by all who play them. The course layout is challenging with a number of holes that stand out as being significant.

ALBINSKI WINS THE 2011 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP AT VICTOR HARBOR GOLF CLUB

Round 3 Report

NSW senior Stefan Albinski has added the 2011 South Australian Senior Amateur Championship to his very imposing record. Played at the Victor Harbor Golf Club Albinski was again dominant winning by 8 shots after rounds of 77-76-73 for a 10 over par total of 226.

It was a very emphatic victory as he was the only golfer to break 80 in all three rounds. The Victor Harbor course was an excellent test for all seniors. The wind was a constant factor and although not an an overly long course it is very tight and with tricky greens that only the best putters could master.

In an amazing career Albinski has now won every state or territory senior title except the ACT and NSW Seniors. He has won many of the state titles multiple times. Albinski has also won the Australian Senior Amateur Championship three times and the Australian Match Play Championship once.

Second place went to Queenslander Chris Coats after rounds of 82-75-77. In a long career Coats has played in more senior amateur events than any other senior golfer and he is showing that he still has the ability to win a major event. Perhaps he will make it three Australian match play titles later in the year?

Third place was shared by three golfers - the early leader Wayne Aigner (76-80-80) who recorded his best result in an Australian Senior Ranking event, Chris Everett from South Australia (80-82-74) who is a relative newcomer but is certainly a player to watch and Queenslander Peter King (80-79-77) who is a proven player and current Australian representative.

Sharing sixth place were NSW senior Denis Dale (81-77-79) and Victorian Ray Walker (78-81-78). Rick Oliver (NSW 80-80-78) was alone in eight place a stroke ahead of West Australian Brendan Curtin (81-78-80). The top ten was completed by the consistent Victorian Alan Bullass (80-80-80).

The 54 hole nett championship was a much closer competition with three players finishing on the same score of 221 with just a single stroke to another group of three players on 222.

The winner on a countback was NSW golfer Bob Angus (pictured left) with nett rounds of 75-75 and an excellent closing round of 71. Runner up was another NSW visitor Rick Abrahams from the NSW Golf Club with nett rounds of 75-74-72. Making it a clean sweep for the NSW visitors was Wayne Aigner from the Narooma club with scores of 71-75-75.

The 2011 championship was a very successful event and anyone travelling south of Adelaide should definitely add Victor Harbor to the itinerary.

Round 2 Report

Round 2 of the 2011 South Australian Senior Amateur Championship at the Victor Harbor Golf Club saw improved weather after the very wild day of round one. The leader with one round remaining is Australia's leading senior amateur Stefan Albinski on a 36 hole total of 153 after rounds of 77-76. Albinski will be very hard to catch as he tries to add one of the few state titles that has eluded him to date.

Round one leader Wayne Aigner from the Narooma Golf Club is in second place three strokes behind after a second round of 80 to follow his opening 76. Queenslander Chris Coats (82-75) had the best round of the second day and the experienced Queenslander has moved into third place and another place in the final group of a state senior championship.

Round 1 Report

The 2011 South Australian Senior Amateur Championship began Monday September 19 in very wild weather at the Victor Harbor Golf Club (celebrating it's centenary). With winds gusting at over 90 kph and a few heavy rain squalls during the round it was a very tough day for the 75 seniors trying to win the title.

The round one leader is Wayne Aigner from the Narooma Golf Club who played some beautiful golf to return a four over par 76. Precision driving and iron play was the secret of Aigner's great round. He leads from tournament favourite Stefan Albinski (NSW) on 77. Albinski recovered from a shaky start to par the back nine. A group of three golfers share third place on 78 - Chris Whitford (SA), Ray Walker (VIC) and Ken Brown (SA)

Round one was one of the most testing days encountered in an Australian Senior Ranking event. With only five scores under 80 golfers on scores of 82 and less still find themselves in with a chance.
