Round 3 Report:

In an exciting day's play the experienced NSW senior Denis Dale (left) has finished as the winner of the 2012 South Australian Senior Amateur Championship played at the very pleasant Barmera Golf Club on the Murray River.

Trailing overnight leader John Beaumont by a stroke Dale fell further behind with Beaumont playing beautiful golf to be one under par after 8 holes. When Beaumont then struck trouble on 9 and Dale birdied 10 it was a one stroke margin to Dale. Victorian Alan Bullas was also playing very well in the final group and was just a couple behind.

The margin stayed the same for most of the back nine with some good golf played by all three as a strong wind came up for the final holes. When the group reached the 485 metre par 5 eighteenth all three still had a chance to win - Dale leading Beaumont by one and Bullas (right) by two. All drove very well on the dog-leg hole and the par 5 green was in reach with perfectly hit shots. Beaumont played first and his 3 wood reached the front edge. Dale matched this shot with his ball running to the back and just through the green. Bullas then played a magnificent 3 wood to no more than 15 feet from the hole. All three could still win the title.

Dale played first and struck his long eagle putt to within a metre and watched anxiously as Beaumont (left) putted for his eagle - it came up well short and he still faced a tricky birdie putt. Bullas then lined up his eagle putt and the crowed groaned as it stopped one roll short and dead on line. Beaumont's birdie putt then looked perfect but "horseshoed" out leaving Dale to stroke home the birdie putt with the knowledge he now had two putts to win.

The final result saw Denis Dale (73-82-75=230) the winner from Alan Bullas (77-78-77-232) and John Beaumont (74-80-78=232). It was a great three days of golf on a beautifully presented regional golf course. If you are travelling the Murray make sure you give the Barmera Golf Club a try.

Round 2 Report:

There is a crowded leader board after day two of the 2012 South Australian Senior Amateur Championship being played at the very pleasant Barmera Golf Club on the Murray River.

The Barmera course was presented in great condition and the weather was even better but all players struggled to score on the tight layout. John Beaumont was disappointed with his second round of 80 but surprisingly finds himself in the lead with rounds of 74-80 and a 36 hole total of 154. Round one leader Denis Dale followed his opening 73 with a struggling round of 82 to share second place with Alan Bullas who has returned steady rounds of 77 and 78. Both these players are on 155 and a shot behind Beaumont.

Top class Victorian Ross Percy was another senior yet to really find his game and with satisfactory rounds of 79 and 77 his total of 156 places him in fourth position and only two strokes from the lead. Tea Tree Gully senior Chris Everett makes up the top five with a total of 157 after rounds of 78 and 79. It is expected that the winner will come from this leading group but a hot round from players further down the list could make it interesting.

The championship finishes tomorrow and with a seeded draw the pressure will be on the final groups as the top players look to find their best games and a chance to claim this state championship.
