GOLF AUSTRALIA SENIORS BEATEN 16-8
BY THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCES TEAM
AT THE NATIONAL GOLF CLUB

Click here to read a wonderful report on the whole event from Tony Kennings

The Australian Defence Forces Golf Association team has proven too strong for the Golf Australia Senior Team with a comfortable 16 matches to 8 matches winning margin in the annual competition that was played this year at The National Golf Club, March 26-27.

The ADF boys used their considerable length off the tee to good advantage on the testing Old course and although the GA team used their experience and sharp short game skills they could not do enough to win the tight matches.

After six years of this very popular competition the result now stands at GA Senior - 2 wins, ADFGA - 2 wins and two series drawn. The 2013 competition will be held in New South Wales where once again the matches will be hard fought but played with a great spirit.

Special congratulations go to Golf Australia senior Tony Kennings who, in a losing side, went through the series undefeated, including a very good individual win against the ADF number one player. Well done Tony!

Day 1 Report from Paul Lulofs

"Melbourne, Victoria is hosting the annual match between Golf Australia and the ADFGA, at the prestigious "National Golf Club". All matches are being played on the original "Old" course and GA Senior Team Captain Adrian Barr advises that its condition has never been better.

Superintendent, Leigh Yanner, and his full compliment of 26 ground staff have done a magnificent job in preparing the course. Greens were double cut and rolled, all bunkers freshly raked, markers set on the Blue blocks (i.e. members tees) and pins placed in championship positions.

All in all a real test for all the players in this event and a full dress rehearsal for the forthcoming National Senior Masters (which already has over 100 entries).

The ADFGA lead GA Seniors 7.5 to 4.5 with 12 individual matches remaining.

So, with the singles to come tomorrow, the ADFGA are in a sound position, but not over the line just yet!

All in all, it has been a lot of serious fun with perfect autumn weather, great food and the usual comfortable accommodation at Paul's "Fairway Resort".

After this event the ADFGA team travels to Sorrento to play the Victorian Senior side on Thursday and Friday. Just to make sure that they don't miss any practice, the ADF boys are going to Royal Melbourne on Wednesday as guests of Charles Baillieu.

Golf Australia has announced the 12 man team of senior golfers to do battle with the Australian Defence Forces Golf Association team at The National Golf Club in March 2012.

There have been two late changes to the Golf Australia Senior Team. South Australian Chris Everett has succombed to a back injury and veteran local Paul Lulofs still has stitches from a recent surgical procedure. The replacements are Victorians Pat Giles and Guy Krall and both are sure to do the senior team proud.

Last year veteran Pat Giles announced his retirement from ADF matches having been the only player to play all 5 to date for the Golf Australia Senior Team. Always a great team man Giles was ready to fill the gap when asked. As the recent winner of the 36 hole Alpine Senior Masters Giles is also in top form.

The Golf Australia Senior Team is a great blend of experience and new talent and should go very close to reclaiming the trophy after the ADFGA's victory over the Golf Australia team in 2011.

Each year, a Golf Australia Senior Team contests a match against the Australian Defence Forces team. The event is played over two days, with foursomes and four-ball matches on day one, and singles matches on day two. The event was first played in 2007.

The GA Senior Team is determined by the High Performance Staff as follows:

  • 1. As the event is not sponsored, players are required to make their way to the host club and contribute to the cost of the course (incl carts), accommodation and meals. Players are required to stay with the team.
  • 2. Players who have been selected in the previous Asia-Pacific Team or Sanctuary Cove Trophy Team are ineligible for selection. Similarly, should the next Asia-Pacific Team or Sanctuary Cove Trophy Team have been selected at the time of the ADF team selection, those players are also ineligible.
  • 3. The leading one player from each State and Territory from the Australian Men's Senior Ranking System (provided they are in the top 40 of the Ranking System at the time of selection and comply with 1. and 2.)
  • 4. The next three (3) players (not included in 3. and comply with 1. and 2.) from the Australian Men's Senior Ranking System
  • 5. One (1) Captain’s pick.
  • 6. Should the number of players selected as per 3, 4 and 5 not reach 12 the balance become Captain's pick, but will be approximately in line with 4.
