South Australian's John Beaumont Wins the
2010 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship

Round Three Report:

In a very popular result, South Australian John Beaumont has won his first Australian Senior Ranking event. Beaumont carded a final round of 76 to win the 2010 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship by two strokes. He finished five over par with rounds of 70-72-76 on the beautifully presented Carbrook Golf Club.

Sharing second place were Queenslanders, Mike Peeck (72-73-75) and Ken Glasson (72-73-75). Peeck had started three strokes behind but hitting off on the back nine first he started with birdies at the first two holes. This saw him soon after move into the lead, a position he held until an out of bounds drive on the sixteenth (his eighth hole) resulted in a triple bogey. Glassop was playing steadily with any errors followed by a birdie on the next hole. Phil Towle slipped behind early and a couple of out of bounds drives prevented him from making any charge at the leaders.

The leading three stayed close all day and when Beaumont holed from 25 feet on seventeen he had joined Peeck in a tie for the lead. This pair were a single stroke ahead of Glassop as they approached the final hole. Glassop found the trees on the right and would need to chip out. Peeck's drive failed to fade and found the hazard while Beaumont stopped just metres from the trees but with a clear shot to the water protected green. A daunting shot and it was still anyone's title.

Peeck took a drop and played to the right of the green. Beaumont needed a great shot and he produced it - over the water, leaving an uphill putt on the treacherous green. He safely two putted and the victory he had wanted and deserved for so long belonged to John Beaumont. The first person to congratulate him was his regular caddy and supporter, wife Marie. She had been there in many of his near misses and it was an emotional few minutes.

Glasson was close to the lead all day and Peeck had impressed with his strong play and they tied for second place. Ken Glassop has finished in the top three several times and a win is certainly close. Peeck is a newcomer to the senior circuit and with plans to play in more events he will definitely be a player to watch.

ACT evergreen Bill Banks (70-75-76) took out fourth place and that helped the Royal Canberra club take second place behind Redcliffe Golf Club in the teams event. Rick Oliver made up the top five with a final round of 72. Oliver had opened with a one under par 70 and his final 72 was the best round of the day. A surprising 81 in the middle cost him a chance at victory.

Australian representative and very consistent player, Greg Corben (77-73-75), had another top ten finish and was alone in sixth place. Phil Towle (72-72-82) faded in the final round but was a clear winner of the 54 hole nett competition. This was the first time Towle had made the final group of a major event and he enjoyed the experience, eventually finishing in seventh place.

Col Hallam (74-78-75) and Brian Sams (77-72-78) tied for eighth place. Hallam was the runner up in 2009 while Sams has previously won the Queensland title. The top ten was rounded out by Queenslander Peter Roberts (74-78-77) a stroke ahead of another newcomer, Peter Dagan (77-77-76) and experienced senior player Denis Dale (74-79-77).

The nett winner was Phil Towle (Coolangatta Tweed Heads - handicap 6) after carding consistent nett scores of 66,66 and 76. Nett runner up went to Peter Roberts (Keperra - handicap 6) with nett scores 68,72 and 71.

Redcliffe Golf Club took out the Teams event after members Colin Gower, Peter Dagan, Clolin Hallam & John Campbell all played consistently over the three rounds to edge out the Royal Canberra team.

Special mention must go to Geoff Everett (The Lakes), who shot his age in the second round after returning an impressive three over par 74. He is a golfing marvel!

The 2010 Queensland Senior Championship was a great success. The event was very well run and the Carbrook course was presented in great condition with lush fairways and greens that were hard, fast and true (especially on the final day). Overall a demanding and fair challenge for the senior golfer.

Final Scores:

218 John BEAUMONT 70 - 72 - 76
220 Ken GLASSON 72 - 73 - 75, Mike PEECK 72 - 73 - 75
221 Bill BANKS 70 - 75 - 76
223 Rick OLIVER 70 - 81 - 72
225 Greg CORBEN 77 - 73 - 75
226 Phil TOWLE 72 - 72 - 82
227 Colin HALLAM 74 - 78 - 75, Brian SAMS 77 - 72 - 78
228 Peter KING 75 - 76 - 77
229 Peter ROBERTS 74 - 78 - 77
230 Peter DAGAN 77 - 77 - 76, Denis DALE 74 - 79 - 77

Round Two Report:

South Australian John Beaumont has taken the 36 hole lead in the 2010 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship being played at Carbrook Golf Club.

After sharing the round one lead with Rick Oliver and Bill Banks, all with opening rounds of one under par 70, Beaumont again played great golf in recording a one over 71 for a 36 hole total of 142. Beaumont has a list of second and third placings in Australian Senior events and a breakthrough victory would be a very popular result.

Beaumont leads by two strokes from the tournament surprise packet Phil Towle, (72-72). A six marker at Coolangatta Tweed Golf Club, Towle is one round away from a fantastic victory in this state championship. Close behind the two leaders are Mike Peeck (72-73), Ken Glasson (72-73) and Bill Banks (70-75). Mike Peeck is a newcomer to senior tournaments but is well known as very talented player. A win would not be a surprise. Ken Glasson has been near a win for a couple of years - this may be the one? It is very hard to see the winner coming from outside these top five players.

Joint round one leader Rick Oliver had a disappointing day and his 70-81 score has probably played him out of winning contention. Brian Sams returned to his best form with a second round 72 after a 77 to open the tournament. Sams has won from behind before but this time seven shots may be too many to catch. Another to improve was NSW senior Greg Corben with a 73 to follow his round one score of 77.

Queenslander Peter King maintained his consistent form and he fills out the top ten after scores of 75-76. Brad Oliver was disappointed with his second round 82 after showing much promise with his opening even par score of 71.

The course has been very well received by all competitors. It has been set up very fairly to reward good play yet will definitely punish a loose shot. Just ask about "hard luck" stories from Col Hallam and Denis Dale who both hit two balls out of bounds in there second round scores of 78 and 79. Obviously bad luck!

Leading Scores:

142 John BEAUMONT 70 - 72
144 Phil TOWLE 72 - 72
145 Bill BANKS 70 - 75, Ken GLASSON 72 - 73, Mike PEECK 72 - 73
149 Brian SAMS 77 - 72
150 Greg CORBEN 77 - 73
151 Peter KING 75 - 76, Rick OLIVER 70 - 81
152 Andrew WOODWARD 76 - 76, Colin HALLAM 74 - 78, Graeme KERRIDGE 77 - 75
152 Peter ROBERTS 74 - 78
153 Brad OLIVER 71 - 82, Denis DALE 74 - 79, Grahame MACDONALD 77 - 76

Round One Report:

Three interstate golfers lead after the first round of the 2010 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship being played at Carbrook Golf Club.

NSW senior Rick Oliver, ACT evergreen Bill Banks and South Australia's leading senior John Beaumont all returned one par rounds of 70.

Rick Oliver played beautifully all day and only two closing bogies prevented a three under par round. Oliver won the previous Senior Ranking event at The National and has obviously maintained his his excellent form.

John Beaumont played exceptional golf - hitting 17 greens and as playing partner Geoff Everett commented - "John could easily have shot 64 if his putter was running hot. It was a great exhibition of shot making."

Bill Banks played his usual solid round - down the middle and on the green all day and the end result was a very neatly compiled round of one under par. These experienced golfers will be very hard to beat.

On a beautifully presented Carbrook course they hold a one stroke lead over Queenslander Brad Oliver and a two stroke lead over three more Queenslanders - Mike Peeck, Ken Glasson and Phil Towle.

Brad Oliver is in his first year of senior golf and he is expected to be a major force in the years ahead. A win in this event would be a great start! Ken Glasson has been close several times and the big hitting Queenslander would not surprise with victory here. Phil Towle has opened with his best round in a senior event and the consistent senior from Coolangatta Tweed will be keen for another good round tomorrow.
