2010 AUSTRALIAN SENIORS DEFEAT THE
AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCES GOLF ASSOCIATION TEAM
AT TALLWOODS GOLF CLUB

The Golf Australia Seniors team has defeated the Australian Defence Forces team by 13.5 matches to 10.5 matches. The annual event was played at Tallwoods Golf Club where the course was presented in great condition and suitably matched by perfect weather.

The ADFGA trailed by three matches after the day one foursomes and fourballs but came out blazing in the individual matches. Their great start saw them lead in ten of the twelve individual matches after nine holes had been played - an historic ADFGA victory looked likely. However, the senior team dug deep and rallied with some great golf and pressure putting to eventually share the individual points - six matches each. This meant the GA Senior team retained the trophy having also won narrowly in 2009.

This event has been played four times and it continues to grow in stature. All the matches have been played in the very best spirit while also being very keenly fought. The social side has also been a great success and lasting friendships have been made between older golfers and the younger golfers who also serve in the defence of our country. It is a great event!

The first two competitions played at Tallwoods in 2007 and Royal Queensland in 2008 resulted in 12-12 draws. A result was finally achieved in 2009 when the Golf Australia team won by a single match at The National Golf Club.

DAY 1 REPORT:

The 2010 Golf Australia Senior Team versus the Australian Defence Forces team competition began in perfect conditions at the beautifully presented Tallwoods Golf Club.
At the completion of the first day of matches it is the old guys who have a comfortable lead. After the fourball and foursomes matches they lead by 7.5 games to 4.5 games.

The ADFGA fielded a strong team, expecially at the top and their number one and two teams were the winners in both the fourball and foursomes matches. However, the strength of the GA Senior team goes all the way through and they managed to win 7 and a half points from the 8 points available in the lower seeded matches.

There are twelve individual match play games tomorrow and with the top guns from the ADFGA expected to be a little too strong they are more than capable of springing a comeback victory. The GA Seniors had led by 9 to 3 in 2009 yet only managed to win by a single game. The singles will be exciting and pressure packed!

DAY 2 REPORT -

The ADF were leading 10 matches to 2 after 9 holes with only Dave Morrison at 3 up looking like a winner. After a great fight back on the back nine by the GA Seniors the singles finished at six matches each.

GA player Steve Cann came from 3 down to edge out big hitting Jason Rae who went into melt down over the last 5 holes.

Evergreen Geoff Everett was also in trouble being 3 down at the turn but called on his years of experience to shoot par on the back 9 and overcome Brendan Creek for a win at the 18th.

Pat Giles also fought hard to come from 3 down early to be 1 up after fourteen holes only to be met by a string of birdies and scrambling pars from ADF's talented Conon Brett who closed out his match 2 and 1.

First timer Russell Rogers struggled against the experienced Tony Greenwood and was never in contention as did Col Hallam who went down 4 and 3 in a high quality and low scoring game against ADF's No.1 player Lennon Thurtell.

Tony Mazzone also trailed after nine and then played his usual tenacious game from tee to green. Hi siron play was top calss but he struggled with his putter on the closing holes to let opponent Geoff Skinner claim a halved match.

Nigel Goodall played consistently throughout although he was another to find trouble on the greens which were medium to slow on the flat and up hill but deceptively fast downhill. In the end he was too experienced for his much younger and big hitting opponent in Dean Cartwright and he came from 1 down at the turn to hit the front and then claim a win on the last hole.

Bob Angus had played great golf on the Monday (three birdies in the fourball) but ran into a hot golfer in Rod Smylie and turned 3 down. He played solidly on the final nine but could not recover losing 3 and 2. Richard Greville played consistent golf all week and in his match against Newcastle pennant player Gary Barber he led by a single hole after nine and in a great match battled right to the final hole and the final putt to record an important one up victory.

The No.2's battle between Vandersluis & Reinke was also a quality match with Reinke going to an early lead after reeling off a string of 12 easy pars that did not allow Vandersluis back into the match.

The Captain versus Captain match was a user friendly affair with Les Browne & Daryl Bell finishing square with neither player getting more than a hole ahead of the other for the entire game.

Undefeated Players:
3 wins - Peter Reinke (ADF)
2 wins + 1 match square - Les Browne, Geoff Everett, Tony Mazzone, Dave Morrison (GA) - Darryl Bell (ADF)
