2009 MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT - ALBINSKI WINS ANOTHER TITLE

The weather was perfect and the day was set for a great final. The greens had been watered overnight and therefore were the best they had been for any of the championship rounds. In a dramatic final that went right down to the very last putt on the eighteenth hole Stefan Albinski won the 2009 Australian Senior Matchplay Championship. Albinski defeated NSW Senior golfer Russell Rogers 1 up.

After high quality golf by both golfers early in the round Rogers found himself 2 down after Albinski had birdied the 14th hole. With four holes remaining in the championship Rogers then lifted his game and, with crisp and accurate iron play, won two holes in a row to square the epic battle standing on the seventeenth tee.

On seventeen Albinski drove too far right and towards potential disaster but his ball stopped just a few metres short of the wasteland area. Rogers had driven well from the tee and then played a great approach that somehow stopped above the hole - he was left with an almost impossible putt down the lightning fast green.

Albinski's second shot had missed the green but he chipped neatly to a gimme putt. Rogers could then only watch as his slippery downhill putt missed the hole and rolled inevitably 2 metres past. When he narrowly missed the return putt he was 1 down.

Both players drove beautifully on the final hole. Albinski then found the middle of the green while Rogers was off to the right. Following an outstanding pitch by Rogers that guaranteed him a par Albinski needed two putts for victory. He putted safely to inches away. This gave Albinski another prestigious title in his impressive and still growing list of senior victories.

In the play off for third place Queenslander Peter King defeated fellow Queenslander Ian Read 2 & 1.

This was the third playing of the Australian Senior Match Play Championships and the first at Thirteenth Beach Golf Club. The event was a definite success with all players certainly looking forward to returning to this venue in 2010.

ROUND FOUR REPORT

Semi Final Day - perhaps the best day so far - warm and a genuine breeze from a new direction. All the players are growing to appreciate the golf course - if you get a chance do have a game at Thirteenth Beach.

The first semi final was between the number one seed and Australia's top ranked senior golfer, Stefan Albinksi, and the experienced Queenslander Ian Read. Albinski was a little too strong and finished with a great birdie on the par 3 16th for a 3 and 2 win. Read was pleased with his performance in the event but commented "Stefan was just too good!"

NSW golfer Russell Rogers was up against Queenslander Peter King in the other semi final. This proved to be a very exciting match. King was 2 down playing the difficult seventeenth but played it well to narrow the gap to one down with one to go. On 18 both players found the same greenside bunker and faced very delicate shots. Rogers played first and the crowd applauded when his explosion rolled to less than a metre. King could not match the shot and it was a win for Rogers.

The State of Origin battle is over - the final will be played between two New South Wales seniors. The play off for third and fourh will be between two Queenslanders.

ROUND THREE REPORT

Day 3 of the Championship presented a pleasant day with a good breeze but considrably kinder than yesterday. With semi finals spots up for grabs there was keen interest in the top level matches.

Number one seed Stefan Albinski kept his championship hopes alive with a comfortable 4&2 victory over Queenslander Norm Way. Albinski will play Ian Read in the first semi final tomorrow. Read played good golf all day to edge out Greg Corben at the seventeenth hole.

NSW golfer Russell Rogers continued his very impressive form in this event and was too good for Queenslander Grahame MacDonald with a 2up victory. Rogers will now play Queenslander Peter King in the other semi final. King holed the pressure putts that mattered and won a close match against fellow Queenslander Dave Morrison on the last hole.

In other matches Victorian Denis Long kept his "giant killer" reputation with a 2 & 1 victory over previous winner of this event - Chris Coats. Long will play another previous winner, Denis Dale, tomorrow.

The final four players are now decided and with 2 Queenslanders and 2 NSW seniors left the interest is maintained in this State of Origin battle.

ROUND TWO REPORT

Day 2 of the Championship began with a strong wind that got stronger as the day continued. At one stage official called a one hour weather delay - some greens were virtually unplayable. Overall, a lot of fun!

Number one seed Stefan Albinski returned to his best form and had a convincing 7&5 win over Alan Bullas. In the "come back story of the day" Norm Way recovered from a 4 hole deficit after 10 to edge out Pat Giles at the eighteenth.

Defending champion Denis Dale lost 2 & 1 in a close match to Queenslander Dave Morrison. In difficult conditions Morrison played great golf to be under par after 10, played steady golf thereafter and fittingly won the match with a perfect iron shot at the difficult 17th. In a real nail biter Greg Corben came from behind to edge out ACT senior Tony Gover at the final hole with his final putt.

Inaugural winner of the title, Chris Coats, was another round 2 loser with fellow Queenslander Grahame MacDonald just a little too strong in his 2 and 1 victory. This means there will definitely be a new Australian Senior Match Play Champion in 2009.

ROUND ONE REPORT

On a great day with just the gentlest of breezes 32 senior golfers teed off in their quest for the prestigious 2009 Australian Seniors Matchplay Championship. Most of the round one results went with the rankings but there were a few surprises.

Number one seed Stefan Albinski and Victorian Paul Bray battled all day before Albinski produced some magical "up and downs" on the final few holes to claim victory by one hole. Big hitting Queenslander Ken Glasson lead early but could not hold off a determined Denis Long who recorded a 2 and 1 victory while Queenslander Norm Way had a great struggle with Graeme Altman before winning at the 20th.

Biggest winner of the day was NSW senior Richard Greville's 7 and 6 victory over Tony Mazzone. Number 2 seed Grahame MacDonald had a comfortable victory over John Stephens from NSW. Victorian Peter Bywaters took defending champion Denis Dale all the way before Dale managed a late birdie to eventually win 2 up.
