ALBINSKI WINS AGAIN AFTER TENSE BATTLE FOR THE 2009 TASMANIAN SENIOR AMATEUR

After opening with a 7 over par 78 Stefan Albinksi showed why he is Australia's leading senior amateur golfer with closing sub par rounds of 69 and 70 to win the 2009 Tasmanian Senior Amateur Championship on the very well presented Mowbray Golf Course.

There is a touch of Tiger Woods in Albinski's recent results - he manages to do whatever is necessary for the win. On the final hole when a birdie three was needed to clinch victory Albinski played his second shot from under the trees to six inches from the hole! Albinski is a very determined golfer and when his putter runs hot (and it often is) he is very hard to stop. He is certainly the favourite for the NSW Senior Championship beginning next week.

There was three way tie for second and all of these players had their chances for victory during the final round. Eventually Brian Sams, Grahame MacDonald and Michael Leedham had to be content with second place.

For Sams it was a case of second place once again as he has now finished second to Albinksi in several senior tournaments in recent months. For MacDonald it was perhaps his best result in senior golf - proving he could handle the pressure of being in the final group on the final day. After winning this event four years in a row Michael Leedham was gracious in defeat but he will remain the player to beat in 2010 when the championship once again returns to Mowbray. Brian Sams received the runner up trophy after a countback.

South Australian John Beaumont led after the first two rounds and was well in contention for most of the final day until a string of bogies on the concluding 5 holes ruined his chances. Beaumont is playing very well and contends in every tournament he plays. He is sure to break through for a major win soon.

New South Wales regulars Tony Kennings and Jack Parker finished in 6th and 7th places. Kennings started the final round with a bogey and two double bogies but then showed his class and determination playing the final 13 holes in three under par for an impressive round of 73.

Jack Parker showed his true form and his consistent rounds of 74, 73 and 77 placed him well in the top ten of the 2009 Tasmanian Senior Championship. It was great to see the popular South Australian Tony Mazzone bounce back after an opening 79. His closing rounds of 72 and 75 moved him into 8th place and some much needed Australian Senior Ranking points.

The Top ten was completed with a five way tie for 9th place. The group included Pat Giles who opened with very good rounds of 73 and 74 before his round one and two form left him in the final round. Others in the five way tie were Greg Corben, Denis Dale, Lindsay Elliott and Ian Read.
