Round One Report:

A strong field of 130 senior golfers from Australia and New Zealand teed up in the 2009 Australian Senior Amateur Championship at the Bribe Island golf course. The course was in excellent condition and the greens true and a nice pace. Everything was ready for another great national championship.

Round one belonged to a newcomer to the Australian Senior Amateur Championship - Coolangatta golfer Rod Dale who played some great golf to finish with a one under par 71 and a share of the lead. Brother of two time Australian Senior Amateur champion Denis Dale, Rod has been a very good club golfer for many years and his entry into state and national championships is very welcome.

Dale shares the lead with Queenslander Grahame MacDonald who continued his constant improvement over the last 18 months. Winner of the Northern Territory Senior Championship in April MacDonald again finds himself in contention for a major senior ranking event.

A single stroke behind Dale and MacDonald are the defending 2008 champion Stefan Albinski, previous dual winner Rodney Barltrop and current member of the Australian Senior Team Ross Bockman. This trio of players recorded par rounds of 72 and are certainly expected to apply pressure to the two leaders.

On a day when the course was presented with what could be decided as friendly tees and pin placements there were many other players who returned good scores. An impressive list of players recorded scores of one over par 73 - Alex Cleave, Chris Coats, Greg Corben, Bob Gamsby, Arthur Parkin and Brian Sams.
