THE SANCTUARY COVE TROPHY - 2008
AUSTRALIAN SENIORS vs NEW ZEALAND SENIORS

The Sanctuary Cove Trophy is played using a Ryder Cup format between teams representing senior golfers from Australia and New Zealand. The inaugural match between twelve man teams was played at Sanctuary Cove in Queensland during July, 2007 and resulted in a comfortable win for the Australians - 19 matches to 5.

The picturesque Titirangi Golf Course in Auckland was the venue for the second challenge match played from February 19-21, 2008. Australia retained the coveted Sanctuary Cove Trophy with a 13.5 matches to 10.5 matches victory.

The following report on the tournament is taken from the New Zealand Golf Association Web Site. It was written by the captain of the New Zealand team - Rodney Barltrop.

A New Zealand Seniors Selection V Australian Seniors
2008 Event Report

New Zealand Selection vs Australia (Seniors) at Titirangi 2008-02-26

After a trial at Titirangi last year NZ was represented by:

  • Alastair Nichols - Whangarei
  • Andrew McKechnie - Hamilton
  • Arthur Parkin - Maungakiekie (Auckland)
  • Bill Bell - Gulf Harbour (North Harbour)
  • David Headland - Whitford Park (Auckland)
  • Hugh Harrison - Takapau (Hawkes Bay)
  • Ken Hankin - Titirangi (Auckland)
  • Martin Webber - Royal Wellington
  • Mike Leitch - Maungakiekie (Auckland)
  • Owen Kendall - Mount Maunganui
  • Rodney Barltrop - Royal Wellington
  • Ron Sisson - Taihape
  • Peter Thomas (non-playing manager) Auckland

The fourball and foresome results really gave us no chance in the event when we could only produce 1 win and 3 halves in those 12 matches. However 8 singles wins on the final day showed we were competitive. The overall result was 13.5 – 10.5 to Australia. The full results can be found on www.ausoom.com which has the Australian view of the results as well.

The Australians play in at least 12 order of merit events which keeps them very competitive. We obviously need to get our players more events to play. A number of our players have played in Australian order of merit events but somehow we need to get everyone of our players playing competitively regularly.

The venue for next year’s event is Sanctuary Cove in July. The trials to make this team will be announced later on this year – with trials probably being in March & April 2009.

Titirangi Golf Club was the host for this year’s event. This is the only golf course in New Zealand designed by the legendary designer Dr Alistair MacKenzie. This point was not lost on our Australian visitors who had a number of players who are members of courses designed by him.

Titirangi Golf Club was a brilliant host and the event went like clockwork with Club Captain Ann Jugum at the helm, well supported by Club Manager Tony Hitchcock and President Keith Norris.
