AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCES CHAMPIONSHIP

COMMENTS ON THE INDIVIDUAL MATCHES BELOW
RESULTS OF ALL MATCHES IN TABLES BELOW

Thanks to Pat Giles for the report and Kerrie MacDonald for the photos

Tony Mazzone     DEFEATED     Kim Johansen     1up
In a hard fought match the little SA sweet swinger was simply too consistent for the experienced Johansen outlasting him to win at 18.

Peter King    DEFEATED     Daryl Bell     5/4
King went from all square at nine to easily defeat Bell via two consecutive birdies aided by a series of errors from Bell.

Cameron Fraser    SQUARE     Phillip Booth     SQUARE
Fraser jumped early and was 3 up after 4 holes only to be pulled back by a determined Booth who put together a barrage of birdies towards the end of the game to over run Fraser.

Geoff Leary    LOST TO    Ash Young      1up
Ash Young also fought back for the ADF coming from 2 down at 9 to prove too strong for Leary who had the fortune to see a second shot smothered 6 iron into the green hook out of bounds on the 18th, only to see it bounce back into bounds for him to go on and seal the match.

Michael Maher    LOST TO    David Standing    3/1
The long hitting Standing fought back from 2 down at the turn with some outstanding birdies to defeat local RQ pennant player Michael Maher.

Tony Gover    DEFEATED     Peter Hawken     3/2
GA's Tony Gover showed a lot of class during the event in winning all three matches. 5 up at the turn he finally despatched of a gallant Hawken at the 16th. A former SA State representative and Eisenhower Cup player for PNG Gover is sure make his presence felt in senior golf over the next few years.

Norm Way    DEFEATED     Scott Smith     5/3
Was always in control of his match being 4 up after nine then playing strategic error free golf to take Smith out at the 15th.

Geoff Everett    DEFEATED     Geoff Skinner     2/1
The veteran of the team Everett had to shoot his age (73) to dispose of the experienced Skinner at the 17th.

Graham MacDonald    DEFEATED     Steve Rotherham    3/1
There was nothing in this match with MacDonald playing to par to defeat Rotherham, a former top Victorian state amateur turned professional before joining the ADF.

Jack Parker    LOST TO    Adam Moss     5/4
NSW seniors legend Jack Parker met a brick wall in the talented young ADF player, Adam Moss who played brilliantly throughout the event to be one of only two undefeated players. A near faultless display of power driving and pin point short irons to very difficult pin placements saw Moss finish under the card for his best ball & singles matches.

Rick Oliver    LOST TO    David Schwartz    3/2
The 2007 joint Australian Seniors Champion was unable to match the power and precision of ADF Champion David Schwartz. A prodigious hitter with a deft touch Schwartz powered his way around the course firing a series of birdies on all the par 5's, whilst Oliver seemed never at ease with the heavy grain of the RQ Bermuda greens.

Nigel Goodall    DEFEATED     Greg Fraser     2/1
This match was the last match left on the course with the scores being ADF 12 & GA 11. WA based Goodall was 3 up at the turn after some impeccable ball striking against the recently crowned Ipswich club champion in Greg Fraser. However a string of birdies on the back nine and a three putt from Goodall saw the match back to 1 up in favour of Goodall playing 17, where Goodall struck a six iron to within 3m of a tight front pin position and Fraser hit his long back leaving a 25m downhill breaking putt. Three putts from Fraser saw Goodall score a hard earned win to square the series 12 matches all.

Next years event is likely to be played in Victoria and will certainly be a keen contest as both teams strive to be the first to record an outright victory. After just two years this competition has already become a landmark event on both the Australian Seniors and ADFGA golfing calendars.

The players listed above were selected in the teams for the second playing of the Australian Seniors Golf Team versus the Australian Defence Force Golf Team. The competition was played in a Ryder Cup format over two days. The match began with Fourball and Foursomes games on the Monday and the Individual games on Tuesday morning.

The 2008 Australian Senior team was selected using the Australian Order of Merit as a basis with an intent to also see representation from as many states and territories as possible. Those players that represented Australia against New Zealand earlier in the year were not considered for selection.

The 2008 event was held in Brisbane at the Royal Queensland Golf Course. Royal Queensland has recently been extensively rebuilt and it was a wonderful opportunity for all players to be among the first to play a major event on this championship course.

In recent years the Australian Defence Forces Golf Association (ADFGA) has participated in matches between the ADFGA team and teams from individual states. The ADF has played a NSWGA team for almost 20 years and more recently played against Queensland and Victorian representative teams. These events have proven to be a great golfing and social success.

This match against a national Seniors team certainly adds further to the development of golf in our armed forces. It is expected this Australian Seniors vs the Australian Defence Forces will be an annual event with the venue rotating between NSW, Queensland and Victoria.
