Inaugural match between ADF and Golf Australia Seniors Team

The inaugural match between twelve man teams from ADF Golf and GA Seniors was played at Tallwoods Golf Club near Forster on the north NSW coast on 8th and 9th October using the Presidents' Cup format.

The opening 4BBB game was won 4 matches to 2 by the ADF on the first morning, however the Seniors team came back well in the afternoon foursomes to level the first day at 6 matches each.

An enjoyable evening meal was provided by Tallwoods and many yarns were shared about how lucky and unlucky players had been during the day. This led to some outrageous proposals for the following day which generally failed to materialize in the cold hard light of day the following morning. A good night was had by all.

The Seniors started well in the singles against the long hitting ADF team (but probably not as experienced in the bar as some of the Seniors). As the day progressed the scores became very close and after both teams had won 4 matches the tension began to rise. Jim Gilchrist came back from dormie 3 down to earn a valuable ½ point, holing a 10 foot put on the 18th after ADF player Lee Oliver had made a miracle bogey following water trouble off the tee.

Geoff Everett holes his putt
to win at 18

The scores were then locked at 5 matches each when the last groups came to the last hole. Evergreen Australian senior Geoff Everett and the experienced Queensland senior Ian Read were 1 up and 1 down respectively. Everett calmly holed a pressure 5 foot putt to defeat Dave Schwartz from ADF 1 up. Dave had narrowly missed his 15 footer following a brilliant second to a difficult back hole position on the last hole.

The attention of all players was now on Ian Read who faced a tricky 8 foot putt on the final green to draw level with Daryl Whitehead. Holing the putt would mean a very valuable ½ point for the Australian Seniors and a narrow win overall. However, the putt slipped just past and the inaugural Australian Seniors vs the ADFGA event finished in a fitting tie - 12 matches each.

Ian Read's putt slides by and
the series ends in a tie!

Next years event will be held in Queensland in May and the event is destined to become a landmark event on both the Seniors and ADF calendars in years to come.

The players listed above were selected in the teams for the inaugural Australian Seniors Golf Team versus the Australian Defence Force Golf Team. The competition was played in a Ryder Cup format over two days. The match began with Fourball and Foursomes games on the Monday and the Individual games on Tuesday morning.

The Australian Seniors team was selected using the Australian Order of Merit plus two 'Captains' picks. Those players that represented Australia against New Zealand, earlier in the year, stepped aside to allow others to have the opportunity to represent their country.

The 2007 event was held on the NSW north coast at the Tallwoods Golf Course who were very generous in providing the course for this event at a minimal cost. Tallwoods is an exclusive development between Forster and Taree and provides a championship course surrounded by properties to buy or for getaway golf holidays.

In recent years the Australian Defence Forces Golf Association (ADFGA) has participated in matches between the ADFGA team and teams from individual states. The ADF has played a NSWGA team for almost 20 years and more recently played against Queensland and Victorian representative teams. These events have proven to be a great golfing and social success.

This match against a national Seniors team will add further to the development of golf in our armed forces. It is expected this Australian Seniors vs the Australian Defence Forces will be an annual event with the venue rotating between NSW, Queensland and Victoria.

Shared accommodation (Sunday and Monday nights) at the Navy units in Forster
